Frozen In Fear

I stand in awe
You came back into my life
The only one I had
Real complications with
The only one that threatened
My life
You are here
In front of my house
I was having a good day
Then I see you
Frozen in fear I am
Unaware of your presence
Until now with no way of
Placing obstacles in your way
Open space
A victim's worst nightmare
A victim I could be
Front page news because
We will fight this time
As you approach
I pray for strength
But I can't move

Urgency

A change gon' come they said
It has
The work is still there to do
Still work ahead for me and you
I sense the urgency
The call to act
It has been a long road
For those before us
A long road for us also
The road is different now
Do not be swayed by singular successes
That times are easier
That would be false
The fallacy, they want you to buy into
You see the disparity
You see the hypocrisy
You see the illiteracy
You see the confusion

The Sky Is Purple

Today, I am gong to believe
In the impossible
Today I will look up at
The sky because it is purple
I will believe that one day
You will be mine
That life was not that mean
That the moisture on my face is not
Tears
That my heart was not that foolish
My eyes that naivee
I can move mountains
Conquer the world
Rewind time
My heart is not broken
Because the sky is purple today
Since I believe it to be

Are You Prepared For The World, Today?

A boy comes down the stairs
To sit at the breakfast counter
Southern cuisine awaits him
He blesses his food
Grabs his fork
Morning, mother
She turns around from the stove
Morning, son, hurry so that you will not miss the bus
Yes, mother, I am aware of the time
How did you sleep
I slept well
He drinks his water and guava juice
Mom, he says
Today will be hard for me
She stops what she is doing to smile at her child
He continues
Today will be hard because
Everything will be new
I am not so certain that I know what to do
Still smiling, she moves toward her son
What do we say when things get hard
He looks up from his plate
He starts
Everyday is a new day
Full of blessings
Things new and unknown will happen
So I carry the Word of God
In my heart and on my tongue
To safeguard me
From hurt and danger
The mother proud of her young son
Says are you prepared for the world today
He stands to his feet
Mother, I know I am prepared
He declares
Thanks for reminding me
Good son, you know I love you
Go catch the bus, now
He runs to grab his backpack
Then to the door
He stops before running out
To go hug his mother
As they embrace
The mother thinks
Is she prepared for the world
She has to face today
